The Boscawen Inn, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
Centrally located in the heart of "Old Town" Lunenburg, the Boscawen Inn is perched on a steep site overlooking the harbour to the south and the municipal park to the north. This Victorian mansion was built in 1888 by Senator H.A.N. Kaulbach, one of the most influential figures in Lunenburg's history. It is Lunenburg's best example of the Queen Anne Revival style of architecture. Formerly known as "Boscawen Manor", the west wing was added in 1945 and the mansion was converted into an inn.
The Boscawen Inn has sixteen guest rooms, located on three levels. Additionally it offers dining, conference and banquet facilities.
McLachlan House, located directly across Lincoln Street from the Boscawen Inn, was built in 1905 for John W. McLachlan, a Dry Goods Merchant and Registrar of Births and Deaths. It features Lunenburg's only octagonal corner tower and is a designated heritage property. The veranda and exterior staircase, which has a certain "ship's bridge" quality about it, was reconstructed in 1993, based on old photographs.
McLachlan House offers four large guest rooms and a Bed and Breakfast atmosphere.
Perched on a hillside with commanding views of the harbor, the Boscawen Inn and McLachlan House are located only a few blocks from the waterfront and in the heart of famous Old Town Lunenburg. The Boscawen Inn faces Parade Square and can be seen in the background.
Both the Boscawen Inn and McLachlan House offer panoramic views of the Lunenburg harbor.
The Boscawen Inn is the perfect base from which to explore Lunenburg in the winter - enjoy the quiet snow lined streets of Old Town Lunenburg, the hustle of unloading the catch and restocking supplies on ships at the busiest fishing harbor in Canada, tour the fleet of Gothic churches (amongst the oldest in Canada) or simply relax in front of a fireplace with a glass of mulled Nova Scotia cider.
One does not have to stay at the Boscawen Inn in order to taste its magic. Two fully liscensed restaurants offer either a candle lit dinner for the romantic couple or casual dining with a panoramic view of the harbor. Alternatively customers may be attracted by an afternoon BBQ on the balcony or afternoon tea in the historic drawing rooms.
The formal dining room serves guests from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and is located in the two former drawing rooms of the historic mansion. The experience of authentic Maritime hospitality and fine dining under candelight in an historic setting is one that guests tend to savor for a long time.
From the large balcony, customers can relax with a drink, enjoy an afternoon BBQ, or simply escape into the past as birds chirp and a schooner slips out to sea. Peridically one can hear the distinct sound of a horse drawn carriage. The evening silence is often broken by the haunting cry of a fog horn.
A full breakfast is served from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in our casual dining room. Guests from all parts of the world tumble out of four poster beds in the morning at the Boscawen Inn and McLachlan House to strike up conversation over freshly baked muffins and coffee.
